Calix, Hatteras Networks Jointly Offer Broadband Solution for Un-Served and Underserved Communities
By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor
Hatteras Networks, a provider of mid-band Ethernet solutions, announced that it is partnering with Calix, a supplier of communications equipment for broadband service delivery, to offer an integrated solution to enable broadband delivery for un-served and underserved communities.
The partnership also announced the certification of Hatteras Networks’ (News - Alert) products in the “Calix Compatible Solution Assurance Program,” a multi-vendor interoperability and compatibility certification program designed to help service providers ascertain the production viability of emerging solution sets incorporating disparate hardware and software elements.
The joint offering and the joint development efforts from Hatteras and Calix (News - Alert) include interoperability of the Hatteras EoC solution with the Calix E5-120 and the integration of both companies’ products into the ODC-100 cabinet.
Officials say that the partnership was formed for the interest of customers participating in the “Broadband Technologies Opportunity Program.” The BTOP is the portion of stimulus monies identified in the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act” of 2009 for the advancement of broadband services in un-served and underserved communities as well as for improved access to broadband by public safety agencies.
Under the Calix Compatible Solution Assurance Program, the companies performed joint product testing under different areas such as Ethernet backhaul transport, fault handling, network management and application and stress testing.
Vijay Raman, vice president of Marketing and Product Management at Hatteras Networks, commented that this partnership is in direct response to their customers’ requests. “Partnering with other access vendors for compatibility is especially important to our customers’ efforts to win Federal stimulus grants,” Raman added.
Hatteras Networks’ EFM service delivery solutions are leading service providers worldwide to a significant expansion of the Metro Ethernet market, which had previously been limited to the fiber footprint, officials said.
Hatteras Networks recently introduced HN239 Repeater and HNLPM8 Line Power Modules to its EFM product family. These new products enable service providers to deploy Mid-Band Ethernet, reaching sites more than 25 miles from the nearest serving office. They also help them bring bandwidth over bonded copper to remote cell towers and DSLAMs.
