Tecore Networks Welcomes the Joint NTIA-RUS Announcement

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Most us of know that the broadband revolution has not reached every corner of America as expected. In many cases, established players do not want to set shop in rural areas as there is not much of a profit to be had. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) has suggested various measures to increase the adaptability of broadband throughout America. Tecore Networks has welcomed these measures.

Deployed for over a decade in rural, new license and remote networks around the globe, Tecore’s (News - Alert) core network, radio access network and turnkey infrastructure products have received USDA Rural Development Acceptance and “Buy American” status. These products are ideal to support applications being accepted in a short window.

The Buy American Act passed in 1933 by Congress and signed by President Roosevelt, required the United States government to prefer U.S.-made products in its purchases.

“Mobile broadband technologies have been more widely adopted, and have driven more economic growth and innovation, than any other technology on the market,” said Bruce Portell, chief operating officer, Tecore Networks. “Tecore’s multi-technology platform brings the same capabilities offered by national networks to rural and remote operators. Our solutions address the needs articulated by NTIA and RUS while fitting within the ‘cost of ownership’ limitations posed by harder-to-serve communities.”

In rural and underserved parts of the country, the ARRA calls for a total of $7.2 billion in funding for broadband initiatives to be overseen by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Rural Utilities Service (RUS). The NTIA-RUS Round 2 announcement covers $4.8 billion in funding, with NTIA accepting applications for middle-mile projects and RUS accepting applications for last-mile projects.

In October the company announced the evolution of its Military Secured Rapid Deployment System, or MilSec-RDS. The solution is said to improve the voice and data communications abilities of armed forces. MilSec-RDS selectively permits or denies access on a per-device basis with its Intelligent Network Access Controller. The solution also provides a 3G Radio Network Controller.
