Intrado and FCC Include 9-1-1 in National Broadband Plan
By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor
The FCC has taken a step forward to strengthen the country’s 9-1-1 emergency network. The Public Safety Bureau issued a recommendation to make next generation 9-1-1 as part of Commission’s obligation with the National Broadband Plan. This recommendation is supported by Intrado.
Individuals in an emergency situation call 9-1-1 first with the hope that help will arrive fast. According to a recent study conducted shows that 76 percent of people trust that 9-1-1 can find out where they are despite of the communications device used. But, the present 9-1-1 network was intended for older phones and it can’t keep up with the technology transformation, shifting consumer trends and consumer expectations.
Intrado (News - Alert), which has played a major role in helping define, build and maintain the complex emergency communications system in North America for more than 30 years, thinks that the FCC (News - Alert) should go on more forcefully to start a strategy for a national framework that smoothes the progress in shifting to a next generation 9-1-1 emergency communications network.
The public safety emergency network of the country will still be behind consumer communications technology and won’t be able to meet consumers’ expectations concerning their usage of photos, videos and text if the next generation 9-1-1 won’t be included in the plan. The country’s public safety agencies, the citizens, particularly those who rely on non-voice communication technologies are unfavorably affected by the current systems’ limitations. Intrado is confident with the importance placed on this very sensitive public safety issue by the Commission.
The President of Intrado, George Heinrichs, said in a statement that the nation will be brought a step closer to getting a 9-1-1 system that meets all the citizens’ needs because of the Commission’s action to include next generation 9-1-1 in the National Broadband Plan. It’s a step that will surely save more lives.
Intrado is joining forces with public safety agencies and telecommunications carriers to provide next generation 9-1-1 technology and services.
