RCN to Design Build and Manage Advanced Fiber-Based Middle Mile Network on Behalf of OpenCape

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

Thanks to a new award of $32 million in Broadband Stimulus grants, OpenCape Corporation has initiated an advanced fiber-based, middle-mile network project for the region of Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the beyond.

RCN, a provider of high-capacity transport services for carriers as well as SMBs, said that on behalf of OpenCape it will be designing, building and managing the 350-mile network that will span from the south coast of Massachusetts onto Cape Cod and the islands and will serve as the broadband backbone for this region.

The project consists of core fiber backbone that connects Cape Cod to two of RCN (News - Alert) Metro’s major regional network access points in Providence and Brockton, a high capacity optical transport system, a microwave radio overlay, and a regional colocation center.

The OpenCape concept addresses the need for a regional communications system to enhance education, research, and economic development, and provide for a reliable and redundant public safety communications network. OpenCape is collaborating with regional, state, and federal entities to ensure a comprehensive and coherent solution is delivered that will serve the telecommunications needs of the citizens and businesses of its proposed service area for the next 50 years.

RCN has claimed that their Metro Optical Networks operates in the nation’s busiest metropolitan markets and serves the critical communications needs of service providers, businesses, hospitals, universities, and the major U.S. stock exchanges.

Felipe Alvarez (News - Alert), president of RCN Metro Optical Networks, has said that they are very happy for the OpenCape Corporation and the residents of Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and the Islands. RCN Metro’s unique expertise in designing, building and operating middle mile, high speed optical networks will ensure communities in this region have reliable access to the highest quality telecommunications services available now and for the next 50 years.

Dan Gallagher, president of OpenCape has said that they are thrilled to be a Stimulus grant recipient. Cape Cod and the Islands are in desperate need of a ubiquitous, reliable, redundant, and cost competitive telecommunications infrastructure. When they first conceived this project, they knew they needed to identify an experienced private operating partner to perform the complex technical network construction and operation. RCN Metro emerged as the ideal partner for this project based on their deep experience designing, building and operating highly successful middle mile networks.
