CTIA Issues Statement on FCC's National Broadband Plan

Steve Largent (News - Alert), president and CEO of CTIA-The Wireless Association, said he applauds the commitment of Broadband team to provide everyone equal access to the most advanced wireless communications.
Largent issued a statement after the FCC (News - Alert) and the Broadband Team released “Connecting America: The National Broadband Plan.” The plan is aimed at make high-speed Internet accessible to all Americans by using government programs.
“Based on the executive summary, it is clear the Broadband team recognized the importance of the mobile Internet to the economy and to meeting many national priorities,” Largent said.
The FCC’s plan includes a goal to release 500 megahertz of spectrum for wireless broadband services by 2020. According to media reports, this would include any spectrum relinquished by broadcasters.
“CTIA (News - Alert) and our member companies are extremely pleased that spectrum is recognized as being pivotal to the National Broadband Plan,” Largent said, adding that they appreciate the FCC’s and the Broadband team’s focus on making “500 MHz of spectrum for broadband within 10 years, of which 300 MHz should be made available for mobile use within five years.”
CTIA is an international organization representing the wireless communications industry. Membership in the association includes wireless carriers and their suppliers, and also providers and manufacturers of wireless data services and products. The associates advocates on behalf of its members at all levels of government.
Largent said that based on the executive summary, it is clear the Broadband team recognized the importance of the mobile Internet to the economy and to meeting many national priorities. “CTIA applauds their commitment to providing everyone equal access to the most advanced wireless communications.”
