FCC Launches Broadband, Homeland Security Web Site for Emergency Responders
By Erin Harrison, Senior Editor
The Federal Communications Commission – as part of its covenant to the American public – today launched the Broadband and Public Safety and Homeland Security Web site to provide information about its proposed $16 billion national wireless network for emergency responders in the recently released National Broadband Plan.
The Web site’s stated mission is: “To collaborate with the public safety community, industry and other government entities to license, facilitate, restore and recover communications services used by the citizens of the United States, including first responders, before, during and after emergencies by disseminating critical information to the public and by implementing the Commission’s policy initiatives.”
The site includes links to the FCC’s (News - Alert) 360-page National Broadband Plan, as well as related testimony from government officials and FCC resources.
The FCC’s Public Safety & Homeland Security Bureau is responsible for developing, recommending, and administering the agency’s policies pertaining to public safety communications issues. These policies include 9-1-1 and E9-1-1; operability and interoperability of public safety communications; communications infrastructure protection and disaster response; and network security and reliability.
