Zayo Bandwidth (News - Alert), a provider of fiber-based bandwidth infrastructure solutions for carrier, enterprise and government customers, has announced that the company will contribute in the construction of 424 route miles along the 700 total route mile build, as a support to Com Net and the ‘GigE Plus Availability Coalition’ or ‘GigEPAC.’

Under the federal Recovery Act Broadband Opportunity Program, GigEPAC received a sum of $30 million for adding and expanding broadband services to 28 rural and underserved communities in Western Ohio.

Zayo Bandwidth owns and operates fiber optic networks that sum up to more than 21,000 fiber route miles, and is a Co-Direct sponsor of the award received by GigEPAC.

GigEPAC is a coalition that is headed by Com Net and comprises of various last-mile broadband providers that include Zayo Bandwidth and OARnet. Under the program, the organization will work towards offering connectivity to schools, state and local governments, public safety entities, libraries and community support organizations.

After the network deployment process is completed, local service providers will also be able to connect to the open network under the project. This federal stimulus funding has been made as a part of a $7.2 billion program that aims at developing broadband access and adoption throughout the United States.

During the current year, Zayo Bandwidth has been awarded with three federal broadband stimulus grants including the latest one, which is also company’s first as a Co-Direct sponsor.

Earlier this month, Zayo Bandwidth was awarded $13.4 million for constructing 286 miles of fiber network connecting 145 local institutions in Anoka County, Minnesota. Previously, in the month of February 2010, the company received $25 million for building 626 miles of fiber network that will connect 21 college campuses and underserved areas in Indiana.
