Nassau County Department of Public Works (NCDPW) has deployed Actelis (News - Alert) Networks’ highly sophisticated Ethernet-based ITS solution to benefit more than 1.3 million Nassau County residents and millions of other New Yorkers and visitors who traverse the county’s 500 lane miles. Nassau County can now enjoy greater access to broadband solutions thanks to this deployment.
The newly deployed ITS broadband solutions enables NCDPW to more efficiently and economically manage its new IP-based video surveillance and traffic controller cameras over fiber and copper networks. The County was approaching a 40 year anniversary of the deployment of its analog computer system and needed to implement a solution powerful enough to meet the performance required from the network.
Actelis Networks announced the successful deployment of its Ethernet Access Devices for Nassau County’s Traffic Management Center (TMC (News - Alert)) at the 18
th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).
The agency needed broadband solutions to handle the growing demand on the network generated by the TMC. The agency deployed Actelis’ environmentally hardened ML680 and ML624 EADs as the access gear could provide the dual purpose of leveraging both copper and fiber-based networks running through the County. The hardened ITS solution was selected to combat lightning strikes and other storm-related events.
According to Jeff Lindgren, traffic engineer at NCDPW, “We looked at multiple vendors and what set Actelis apart were its products’ resiliency, efficiency and, most importantly, communication protocols. Other solutions use a simple DSL protocol, which limited the bandwidth and reliability. Actelis’ copper-bonding capabilities leverage multiple copper pairs to deliver more bandwidth. We also realized that if one copper pair went down, the additional copper pairs provided the reliability required to ensure service continuity. By selecting Actelis, we successfully met the stringent goals required to upgrade and future-proof our transportation network.”
In addition to IP-based traffic controllers, Nassau County’s revitalized transportation network also received Variable Message Signs (VMS), new video surveillance cameras and other road weather solutions. Broadband solutions were necessary to support the transfer of data captured with these new technology implementations, demanding the Ethernet-based ITS solution.
Lindgren noted this implementation allowed the County to plug in existing controllers or new cameras right into the system. With Acetelis’ MetaASSIST network management solution, the County can easily troubleshoot, manage and provision all equipment.
In related broadband solutions news, Actelis Networks has also been deployed by the Wyoming Department of Transportation. WYDOT deployed the ITS networking solution as part of a wide-scale revitalization of its transportation network, serving nearly 60,000 Cheyenne residents. The department implemented broadband solutions consisting of Actelis’ ML690 aggregation switches, and ML680 and ML622 EADs.
Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) deployed the ITS over copper networking solution as part of a major upgrade to the broadband solutions within Maryland’s aging automotive traffic system. Advanced communications solutions were put in place, including the hardened ML2300 aggregation switches, ML680 and ML624 EADs. This deployment will enable the connection between the country’s new IP-based traffic controllers and its centralized Traffic Operations Center.
