Trilific's Optical Loss Test Sets New Bar for Speed and Accuracy

 By Beecher Tuttle, TMCnet Contributor

Efficiently troubleshooting fiber-optic cable and broadband lines requires fast and accurate measurement tools. Unfortunately, technicians often need to rely on a number of disparate pieces of communication test equipment that are routinely packaged and sold separately.

A cost-effective answer to this concern is the TFS-401 Optical Loss Test Set from communication test equipment specialist Trilific. The new optical loss test set includes the industry-leading TFS-201 Optical Light Source (News - Alert) and TFS-301 Optical Power Meter – both packaged together in a rugged waterproof carrying case that includes high impact rubber bumpers, weather resistant membrane switches and a durable powder coat finish.

As a standalone device, the optical power meter is ideal for absolute measurements. The device can be calibrated at four different wavelengths: 1310 nm, 1490 nm, 1550 nm, and 1625 nm. When using both devices concurrently, technicians can accurately determine fiber loss through a series of relative measurements. The TFS-201 Optical Light Source provides the stable source of light needed to perform the base measurements.

"A perfect complement to the TFS-301 Optical Power Meter, the TFS-201 source allows simultaneous operation of both outputs or individual operation with either CW, 30Hz, 500Hz, or 2kHz modulation," says Trilific. "The optical light source operates at 1310 nm or 1550 nm with ST, SC & FC Adapters."

One of the true differentiators of Trilific's test set is the ability to store zero references for reading all four wavelengths independently. This feature enables technicians to turn off the unit between locations without worrying about losing critical data.

Recognizing that technicians are always on-the-go, Trilific designed the test set with two power sources. Users can power the devices with either four AA alkaline batteries or an AC/DC adapter with four AA NiMH batteries, which are included as part of the test set.

Technicians who are in a real time crunch can also take advantage of the unit's emergency quick-charge mode, which allows users to charge the batteries in around 1 hour.
