Embedded Multi-core: 6WIND's Software Optimized for Cavium OCTEON II Processor

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Cavium’s 32-core OCTEON II CN68XX embedded processor family will receive optimized support by the new 6WINDGate software, according to a recent release. With over 40Gbps of performance, the time-to-market for cloud networking and mobile infrastructure equipment is accelerated by the new software.

The development of best-in-class cloud networking and mobile infrastructure equipment is enabled by 6WINDGate. An announcement in this regard has been made by the industry standard for commercial embedded multi-core packet processing software, 6WIND.

Line rates up to 40Gbps need to be achieved by designers of next-generation networking equipment. Intelligent networking, advanced security protocols and energy reduction also need to be supported. The OCTEON II’s extensive on-chip dedicated hardware acceleration blocks are leveraged by 6WINDGate to address these requirements.

A total throughput of 40Gbps on IP Forwarding or IPsec is delivered by 6WINDGate for typical network traffic. Only a few of the cores available on a single 32-core, 1.5GHz CN68XX processor are used by 6WINDGate for the same. Additional value-added networking features or applications can be therefore run using the remaining cores. Until the platform achieves full wire speed, the per-core performance scales linearly with the number of cores running 6WINDGate.

The early availability of 6WINDGate support for the OCTEON II architecture is due to the close cooperation between experts at 6WIND and Cavium. Stable, proven APIs have been incorporated in the robust architecture of the 6WINDGate software. 6WIND was also able to accelerate the porting process by using tools like Cavium’s OCTEON simulator.

“We have had a long-term, close partnership with Cavium and many of our existing customers already run 6WINDGate on platforms based on earlier Cavium processors. Our new release leverages the high performance and deterministic, low latency of the OCTEON II CN68XX and enables customers to quickly extend their product lines for high-performance applications in cloud networking and mobile infrastructure equipment,” said Eric Carmès, CEO of 6WIND, in a statement.

According to Carmès, new customers are able to quickly develop or migrate their application software as full compatibility with standard Operating System APIs is maintained by 6WINDGate. Apart from reducing their schedule risk, the customers’ time-to-market is accelerated.
