Wind River's Embedded Multi-core 2011 Recap

By Stefanie Mosca, TMCnet Managing Editor

When it comes to embedded and mobile software, Wind River has certainly made a name for itself as one of the leaders in the space. And with a number of announcements regarding partnerships, new products and advancements to the company’s impressive portfolio of embedded multi-core tools, Wind River has quite a successful year to look back on and much to look forward to in 2012. Here are some of the most noteworthy stories released by the company in 2011.

On the mobile side, the company collaborated with Leadcore Technology to develop and test the Android (News - Alert) SOC smartphone platform. A core member of Datang Telecom Technology and Industry Group, Leadcore has offered its new ARM9-based SoC platform and will launch its Cortex-A9 version later this year. These developments are aimed at further driving the adoption of low-cost Android smartphones in regional markets.

In addition, Fujitsu (News - Alert) selected Wind River FAST framework for automated software testing for Android phones. The selection of FAST was a significant decision for Fujitsu as the automated software testing solution for Android-based devices reduces testing costs and enables faster time-to-market for device manufacturers.  Fujitsu is already using Wind River FAST to test the next generation of Fujitsu smartphones which will be available later this year.

Another exciting development that was announced just this past month, Wind River was recognized as a Multi-core market leader for the second consecutive year by VDC Research Group (News - Alert). In addition to receiving recognition for multi-core enablement, Wind River also won top honors in VDS’s 2011 “Embedded Software Engineer Market Technologies & Statistics” report series in categories including Embedded/Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), Android & Linux in the Embedded Systems Market and Virtualization for Mobile and Embedded Systems.

Most recently, to close out the 2011 calendar year, Wind River formed a pact with Infineon to expand its integrated software tools for Tricore Microcontrollers. Together, the partnership will help to expand the integrated software toolset that is part of Wind River’s Diab Compiler for the TriCore microcontroller architecture of Infineon Technologies (News - Alert), which includes the AUDO MAX and TriCore families. In addition, Wind River also released an update to its Diab Compiler to deliver enhanced performance for TriCore developers.

Stay tuned to Wind River’s Embedded Multi-core channel, exclusively on TMCnet, as the company continues to roll out advancements to their portfolio as well as new products and partnerships in the New Year.
