Mobile Personalization - Mobile Personalization Provider Bridgewater Systems' Sets Benchmark for 3G and 4G Control Plane

Over the last few years, telecommunication companies have introduced a number of innovative products and services that have improved the consumer experience and revolutionized the way that people communicate with each other. However, the expansion of this market has forced operators to create 3G and LTE (News - Alert) mobile networks that are capable of responding to the exponential growth of mobile data traffic and the ever-increasing use of smartphones.

One of the most vital pieces of these advanced networks is the control plane, which is responsible for policy control, subscriber and device data management. A control plane directly interacts with gateways and enforcement points, allowing for the appropriate management of mobile data traffic.

In an effort to verify the scalability, reliability and performance of a specific control plane, the European Advanced Networking Testing Center recently conducted 3G and 4G mobile packet core tests. The objective of the July exercise was to create a set of benchmarks that can enable network operators to establish whether prospective technology providers can meet certain expectations and requirements.

Following six weeks of rigorous testing, Bridgewater Systems’ (News - Alert) control plane solution – the Bridgewater Home Subscriber Server (HSS) and Policy Controller – and the Cisco (News - Alert) ASR 5000 were validated as reliable and scalable pieces of equipment. Bridgewater and Cisco’s solutions performed beyond the requirements of current networks during extreme periods of mobile data traffic.

During the 3G trials, the Bridgewater PCRF supported the testing of Cisco’s GSSN, where one million simulated users accessed the network concurrently at a continuous rate of 18,000 packet data protocol (PDP) activations per second. Meanwhile, the Bridgewater HSS and PCRF supported the testing of Cisco’s mobility management entity (MME) and packet data network (PDN) gateway, respectively. These solutions supported sustained rates of 5,000 attachments per second.

"In collaboration with Cisco, Bridgewater has set the industry performance benchmark for the 3G and 4G control plane,” said David Sharpley (News - Alert), Senior Vice President, Bridgewater Systems.

“These independently validated results for the Bridgewater Home Subscriber Server and Policy Controller reflect our continued commitment to exceeding the carrier-grade performance and scalability requirements of our customers as they deploy next generation mobile networks,” he added.

Control plane performance is imperative for operators who are deploying advanced mobile networks. The results of these tests prove that the subscriber activations-per-second rate of Bridgewater Systems and Cisco’s solutions are capable of supporting any network in the world today.
