Network Acceleration Necessary to Support Strain on Networks

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

A number of network operators today are facing difficult challenges in their day-to-day operations as they struggle to try and meet the demand for broadband connectivity, while identifying ways to increase their revenues at the same time. It's the old motto, “more for less,” highlighting the need for network acceleration.

As captured in this Wind River (News - Alert) page, many providers are looking at network acceleration as the answer. These companies are looking to turn software solutions into a maximized service management tool to provide the best technology available. The aim is to support the increased pressure on the network and provide the services subscribers demand.

To address these challenges, Wind River offers VxWorks. This Wind River product features an innovative real-time embedded platform with a robust operating system to handle all the enhancements for hardware technology and processors. VxWorks has the ability to service more than 1 billion systems around the world. Whether it's a small consumer product or a commercial airliner, Wind River's network acceleration solution has proven to be a successful choice after 30 years.

VxWorks offers RTOS innovation, meeting all the requirements for embedded systems that are held accountable to performance, memory and power consumption. As application requirements continue to grow, this particular RTOS aims to satisfy both safety and security standards put out by the customers themselves.

Of the top innovations, VxWorks puts a solid user interface and connectivity at the top of its priorities, but there is always support for multi-core, scalability, connectivity and graphics. This leads to the promised network acceleration.

Wind River offers predominant strengths in the industry, particularly in its network acceleration platforms and RTOS. Its RTOS is positioned as the best in the world, and the VxWorks footprint offers a completely configurable and tunable small memory footprint for today’s memory-constrained systems. The end user can control how much of the operating system needed.

As for real-time performance, Wind River's RTOS has the ability to take on even the most demanding of time constraints and do so on a network acceleration platform that is driven by responsiveness. With strict security standards, RTOS has to be highly reliable and VxWorks enables users to conform to even the most lax or strict policies with no worry over costly errors.

Scalability is important to any business, and the basis for RTOS with Wind River is a small-scale series of devices, large-scale networking systems and everything in between. VxWorks gives its RTOS users a 64-bit process for optimal network acceleration as data requirements are a revolving door. The continuous changes with embedded real-time systems are able to grow with the provider, evolving with the industry to respond accordingly.
