Wind River Solution Accelerators for Android Provide Increased Device Development

By Stefanie Mosca, TMCnet Managing Editor

Coming off of a successful 2011, Wind River (News - Alert), provider of innovative network acceleration tools and embedded and mobile software, is starting 2012 out on the right foot. Its first release of the New Year is a noteworthy one and has been generating a lot of buzz on media outlets across the Web in the past week alone.

Just in time for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Wind River has introduced Wind River Solution Accelerators for Android, a series of software modules to help developers launch their Android (News - Alert) development while integrating additional features and functionalities to their devices.

Wind River Solution Accelerators for Android are tested and validated applications and middleware components that can be combined with custom engineering services to optimize for market specific needs, according to Wind River. Equipment and design manufacturers as well as service providers can utilize Wind River Android Solution Accelerators to build their own Android-based offerings while personalizing them with their own branding and additional features specific to their company.

The Accelerators are currently available in three software modules: including User Experience, Connectivity and Medical.

The User Experience module provides accelerated boot time technologies including Hyper boot enabling devices to resume from RAM (News - Alert) in less than 1 second and from Flash in 8 seconds. This module also offers multi-windowing screen navigation, multimedia functionalities and a firmware management system that supports both online and offline update methods, according to the company.

The Connectivity module consists of multimedia interoperability capabilities from the DLNA standard, SyncML support and FM radio capabilities.

Lastly, the Medical module helps medical device manufacturers leverage Android platforms by supporting the IEEE (News - Alert) 11073 stack, which is the format for information exchange between personal health devices such as weight scales, blood pressure monitors and blood oxygen monitors. The Medical module also includes an optimized Bluetooth Health Device Protocol implementation and applications for medical sensor management and resulting data display, reporting and communication.

"Fast-paced technology release cycles and intense competitive pressures have created incredibly tight market deadlines and the demand to create differentiating features, while staying on budget, continues to increase," said Chris Buerger, senior director of product management and marketing for Android software at Wind River. "Wind River is taking its wealth of Android knowledge and providing a catalog of powerful Android solution accelerators that developers can immediately draw from and customize to their individual device development needs."

If you are in Las Vegas this week for CES, Wind River will be present showcasing its Wind River Solution Accelerators for Android demonstrations at booth MP25057. For more information Wind River's participation at CES click here.
