Wind River Extends Safety Capabilities to Avionics

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

Embedded and mobile software provider, Wind River (News - Alert), announced last week its commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) evidence for RTCA DO-178C certified systems.

What this means for avionics systems is VxWorks Cert Platform and VxWorks 653 Platform now adhere to DO-178C, which regulates the safety and reliability of software in airborne systems.

DO-178C updated DO-178B by adding three core documents in criteria for accepted software. Included in this rigorous certification is the technology challenge in regards to design and implementation.

The emerging DO-178C standard provides avionics suppliers the tools and guidance necessary to achieve cost-effective certification via DO-178C’s new technology supplements, which are formal methods, model-based development, and object-oriented technologies.

Wind River’s VxWorks Cert Platform for federated systems, and VxWorks 653 Platform, for ARINC (News - Alert) 653 space and time partitioned, multi-vendor Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) systems now support adherence to these DO-178C, Level A guidelines.

"Wind River leads the industry with its COTS DO-178C compliant certification evidence. The VxWorks 653 DVD contains over 70,000 hyperlinked files to support the insertion of this evidence into a FAA-certified system," said George Romanski, CEO of Verocel, Inc., in a press release.

According to Joe Wlad, senior director of aerospace and defence at Wind River and FAA designated engineering representative: “This capability will be invaluable to our customers using our VxWorks product line by helping them to qualify their end systems to meet DO-178C software quality standards.”

In other Wind River news, this week, Wind River partnered up with Coverity (News - Alert) to integrate Coverity's development testing platform for security with Wind River's embedded software.

"Our development testing roots began in embedded software, and today over 1,100 of the world's largest device manufacturers and software companies rely on Coverity to help prevent critical defects," said Jennifer Johnson, Vice President of Marketing at Coverity. "We are excited to join forces with Wind River, a pioneer in embedded software, ma king it easier than ever to build security into the development process without impacting rapid delivery schedules."
