Exinda Reduces Bandwidth Consumption at Georgia Southern University

By Anamika Singh, TMCnet Contributor

Exinda, a provider of WAN optimization solutions incorporating Unified Performance Management applications, announced that Georgia Southern University (GSU) has deployed an Exinda WAN optimization appliance for better application experience of its users across GSU’s campus. The adoption of the Exinda solution has reduced the university's network bandwidth consumption by 22 percent, the company said.

With network traffic growing exponentially, application performance and WAN optimization are two of the biggest IT challenges that organizations face. Network managers and administrators lacked a comprehensive solution for monitoring and managing network resources and bandwidth while meeting user expectations for fast application response. Exinda provide users with the best network experience possible by maximizing the speed and efficiency of applications over the network.

Exinda’s unified performance management (UPM) solution brings together a suite of advanced, best-of breed, visibility, traffic-shaping and WAN optimization technologies into a single, easy to-use appliance designed to improve network productivity.

Exinda is the only unified performance management solution on the market. Controlled through a seamlessly integrated, unified management console, Exinda reduces costs, increases revenue and allows you to get the most out of your network.

“With the Exinda 8060 solution in place, we can guarantee performance 24/7 by prioritizing critical applications such as streaming educational course materials, while limiting the bandwidth available to recreational applications such as BitTorrent (News - Alert),” stated Krey Tinker, network administrator for Georgia Southern University, in a company statement.

Designed for headquarter offices and data centers, the 8060 model expands to support up to 5 Gbps worth of traffic and up to 100,000 users.

“Our previous solution for this had proven unable to provide enough granularity and control, and compared to Exinda was just too complex to manage,” Tinker added in the statement.

GSU’s selected Exinda to ensure students and faculty get a better user experience. Exinda appliances prioritize key university applications like video sharing and cloud-based collaboration, and ensure each student gets a share of network bandwidth.

WAN optimization usually focuses on mass data compression but Exinda’s performance assurance technology introduces user and application profiling for precision control and better student user experience. Exinda’s assurance architecture was designed for the education market, and it is the only WAN Optimization solution that targets 52 unique user and application attributes to optimize traffic for the network to meet its service level agreements.

“Familiar problems like balancing the network bandwidth demands of critical applications against more spurious sources of traffic, are amplified within universities where today’s students and research professionals expect optimum user experience whatever they are doing,” said Kevin Suitor (News - Alert), VP, Customer Advocacy at Exinda, in the statement.

“The GSU deployment is a great example of how Exinda can be harnessed to shape and prioritize traffic by application or by user. The added Edge Cache capability ensures big traffic loads such as YouTube (News - Alert) and Windows update traffic still flow efficiently but without being allowed to commandeer network resources,” Suitor added.
