Delta ID Powers Iris Recognition in NTT DOCOMO and Fujitsu's ARROWS NX F-04G, World's First Smartphone with Iris Recognition

NEWARK, Calif., May 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Delta ID Inc., a company focused on bringing secure and convenient biometric authentication to mass-market computing devices, announced its ActiveIRIS® technology powers the iris recognition system of the ARROWS NX F-04G launched by NTT DOCOMO, INC. in Japan today. The ARROWS NX F-04G, developed by Fujitsu Limited, is the world's first smartphone with iris recognition technology.

Delta ID's patent-pending ActiveIRIS® makes the iris in our eyes a unique and secret "password" that we never have to remember. With ActiveIRIS® technology, users of the ARROWS NX F-04G smartphone can just look at their device to unlock it. Beyond the device unlock, NTT DOCOMO also plans to use iris recognition technology to authenticate mobile payments, and enable access to a range of online services.

"It was a pleasure to work with Delta ID in bringing this iris authentication technology to market, a first of its kind in the industry," said Katsumi Takada, Head of Mobile Phones Business Unit, Fujitsu Limited. "We at Fujitsu develop products that can be used with comfort and convenience, and continue to accelerate efforts to expand ourshare of the mobile phone market."

The iris is widely accepted in the biometric community as a more secure and reliable modality to identify and authenticate people. Unlike face or fingerprints, iris works across a broader population, and remains unaffected by external conditions. But its use has been limited to special applications in government, defense and enterprise primarily due to poor usability and high cost. Delta ID has made remarkable advances in addressing both these limitations, making iris recognition technology accessible to consumer mobile devices and applications. Its ActiveIRIS® technology combines advanced software algorithm with simple, inexpensive, easy to integrate hardware to make iris recognition fast and reliable in conditions and scenarios where users typically use their mobile devices.

"It has been a privilege to collaborate with Fujitsu in bringing the world's first mobile phone with iris recognition capability to market," said Salil Prabhakar, President and CEO of Delta ID. "We now look forward to consumers widely adopting this technology to make their mobile experience more convenient and secure," he added.
