APX Labs Announces Corporate Name Change to Upskill

WASHINGTON, Jan. 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, APX Labs announced it has changed the company's name to "Upskill" to better reflect its mission to elevate the impact of people in the connected industrial workplace. Upskill's enterprise software platform, Skylight, will continue to deliver wearable solutions that measurably and immediately experience greater worker productivity, fewer errors, less downtime, and an overall, more connected and effective operation by providing information to workers on demand, where and when they need it via smart glasses and other wearable and mobile devices.

"This is an exciting time when the data-rich world of the Industrial Internet is driving profound changes to manufacturing," said Paul Boris, vice president, manufacturing industries, GE Digital. "We are seeing the intersection of hardware, software and data in a way that we never have before. Wearable technology is a part of the revolution that is disrupting how industrial organizations like GE operate by providing access to information directly to front-line workers, helping optimize factories and the supply chain to drive speed, cost savings, quality and improved overall outcomes."

Since 2010, Upskill has been the leader of enterprise wearable technologies, providing solutions to some of the world's leading manufacturers, including Boeing, Johnson & Johnson, Rio Tinto, Jabil, Shell, Bell Helicopter, Lockheed Martin and GE. With the company's Skylight platform on wearable devices, organizations connect their hands-on orkforce with the people, processes, information and equipment they need to do their jobs with greater efficiency, quality and compliance, leaving them hands free to focus on their tasks at hand, and their tools. As example, Upskill has helped Boeing drive productivity improvements in their wire harness assembly operations by 25 percent and improve quality by minimizing errors to virtually zero.

"Much of the discussion around robotics and automation focuses on how these new technologies will replace human workers and eliminate jobs, as the Fourth Industrial Revolution progresses," said Brian Ballard, co-founder and CEO of Upskill. "At the same time, we're seeing stagnation in productivity in the US, while hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs go unfilled, at least in part because there are not enough people with the right skillsets to fill them. Our Skylight platform on wearable devices enhances human skills, augmenting workers' capabilities and allowing them to perform their job functions faster and more accurately than ever before. We strive to enable every industrial hands-on worker to be empowered and connected to drive value from the factory to the warehouse to the jobsite, and our new name better reflects that."

As a testament to the company's impact on the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Upskill was recently recognized by World Economic Forum as a 2016 Technology Pioneer. The company name change comes on the eve of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, Jan. 17-20, 2017, where Ballard will join prominent global leaders to discuss topics that can have transformative impact at a global level.

"We recognized Upskill as a Technology Pioneer because of the promise and significance its innovative technology offers on business and society," said Murat Sonmez, Chief Business Officer at the World Economic Forum. "As we prepare for important discussions beginning tomorrow in Davos, the company's new name appropriately clarifies and strengthens its contributions to helping address important issues around the global skills gap, productivity and progress essential to the Fourth Industrial Revolution."
