ReCellular Tapped to Turn Donated Cell Phones Into Cash for Arizona's 9/11 Memorial Fundraising Effort
PHOENIX, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- ReCellular Inc., the world's leading collector, reseller and recycler of used wireless phones and accessories, announced today that they will provide critical support for the fundraising effort to build the State of Arizona's September 11th memorial. Plans for the memorial were announced at the State Capitol today by Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, firefighters, police, military personnel and area citizens whose lives were impacted that day.
"Arizona's September 11th Memorial will be built on the Capitol Mall so that future generations will not forget the tragic losses of life and the inspiration, heroism and lessons learned that day," Gov. Napolitano said in her remarks. "Today we are announcing the start of a fundraising effort to make this memorial a reality."
The Governor said the first phase of fundraising will be accomplished through the collection of used cell phones that will be refurbished and resold in developing markets by ReCellular Inc. The governor said that checks or online donations are being solicited as well.
"ReCellular is proud to be helping the Governor of Arizona in her mission to build a memorial to the victims of the terrorist attacks of 9/11," said Charles Newman, president of ReCellular Inc. "This kind of program works for everyone -- the donor, the person who buys the phone, and of course in this case, the memorial to be built at the capitol in Phoenix."
According to United Phoenix Firefighters' President, Billy Shields, "Cell phones were instrumental in communicating during the Sept. 11, 2001 events and it's extremely relevant that we're using cell phone donations to kick off this campaign."
Arizona partners in the public collection of cell phones are Bank of America and Bashas' stores. Both will collect cell phones at statewide locations from Sept. 1 through Oct. 31.
First responders also are active in this effort: The United Phoenix Firefighters will collect cell phones at firehouses throughout Maricopa county and police will accept donations through the Phoenix Law Enforcement Agency (PLEA). Cell phone collection boxes also will be located at 38 state agencies and in all City of Phoenix offices.
The Arizona Diamondbacks and Phoenix Mercury have joined the team and firefighters will collect cell phones at the Sept. 12 and 14 Diamondback games at Bank One Ballpark and at the Phoenix Mercury game on Sat. Sept. 11th at America West Arena.
The Arizona Republic and Azcentral.com partners are donating print ads in the newspaper and banner ads and links on one of Arizona's most popular websites, http://www.azcentral.com/ . The Commission also has its own website, http://www.az911memorial.com/ , that can accept online donations and offer more information on the memorial, cell phone donation locations and program logistics.
Fundraising, design and planning for the memorial are being coordinated by the Governor's September 11th Memorial Commission, a panel formed by Executive Order to establish the landmark.
"The goal will be to raise one million dollars through the collection of cell phones and through check and online donations to fund this important memorial," added Shields. "It is our hope that such a monument to those who died, served and rallied to the cause will be a worthy and lasting education symbol to remind us of how our great State came together in the face of adversity."
ReCellular and the Governor's September 11th Memorial Commission are targeting the collection of over 250,000 used cell phones and pagers during this campaign with the goal of generating well over $1 million in proceeds going directly to the construction of the memorial.
