BindView Introduces FISMA Compliance Capabilities to Help Government Agencies Secure IT Infrastructures and Meet OMB Audit Mandates

HOUSTON --(Business Wire)-- March 30, 2004 -- Helping U.S. government agencies to meet new federal compliance mandates and satisfy Office of Management & Budget (OMB) audits, BindView Corp. (Nasdaq:BVEW) today announced the release of BindView Report Packs for FISMA, a security and vulnerability management reporting solution to help government agencies comply with the Federal Information Security Act of 2002 (FISMA). As a fully integrated compliance solution, BindView Report Packs for FISMA allow IT and security administrators to automatically identify and proactively remediate security vulnerabilities in the information systems of federal agencies before they are exploited.

FISMA places significant requirements on federal agencies for the defense-in-depth protection of their information systems. To comply with the mandate, federal agencies must develop, document and implement a department-wide information security program, then demonstrate the effectiveness of their risk assessment and response strategy through independent audits and evaluations.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), using a BindView solution, was cited by the OMB in the Budget of the United States 2005; Analytical Perspectives as having excelled at protecting their information security assets. EPA has evaluated the risks to, and certified the security of, its IT systems. Beyond documentation, however, EPA has implemented quantified measures of repelled attacked and blocked virus...(the) EPA has taken great steps to protect the integrity of the agency.

Securing the EPA's IT infrastructure is a strategic imperative for our agency, and we are proud that the OMB recognizes the quantifiable progress we've made to meet our FISMA requirements, said EPA Deputy CIO Mark Day. Using BindView-based reports to management, our technical compliance scores have soared to almost 95 percent, from a starting point of 35 percent. We've created a cultural shift by providing clear, easy-to-understand reports to management upon which they can act without being technical experts themselves. That has proven critical in helping us stay compliant with our technical standards.

BindView Report Packs for FISMA enable federal agencies to cost-effectively meet FISMA risk assessment and audit guidelines by automating the identification and remediation processes for key IT system vulnerabilities. The Report Packs also evaluate and audit the effectiveness of vulnerability management programs as outlined in the National Institute for Standards and Technology's (NIST) Special Publication 800-53, which recommends security controls for federal information systems under FISMA.

FISMA provides federal agencies with a comprehensive framework for enhancing the effectiveness of their IT security programs. The ability to perform detailed risk assessments, quickly remediate potential vulnerabilities and report on agency performance are important success factors for compliance, said BindView President and Chief Executive Officer Eric Pulaski. Our Report Packs for FISMA, coupled with a lifecycle approach to risk assessment and management, put the framework into action, allowing federal agencies to secure their IT environments and meet regulatory compliance and audit requirements.

BindView Report Packs for FISMA are now available for Windows, Unix, NetWare and NDS/eDirectory environments. BindView Professional Services offers consulting engagements to implement the new FISMA Report Packs specifically tuned to the requirements and environments of each federal agency.
