Network Chemistry Announces New Worm Detection Capabilities

PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Network Chemistry, provider of advanced RF security solutions, announced today that its RFprotect(TM) Wireless Intrusion Protection System now detects wireless worm attacks, including zero day attacks, on 802.11 devices. The new detections are part of RFprotect's Advanced Rogue Analysis module which goes beyond basic rogue WLAN detection to more closely scrutinize mobile devices and their behavior. The RFprotect system alerts network administrators of any inappropriate activity so that mitigation procedures start before any problems occur.
"Hackers today are getting cleverer, creating worms and viruses to take advantage of wireless specific vulnerabilities -- even before vendors know these vulnerabilities exist," said Rob Markovich, CEO of Network Chemistry. "When these worms are introduced into a network, they wreak tremendous havoc. RFprotect is the only product on the market that acts as an early warning system for such attacks. Our customers need these tools to mitigate the spread of worms, saving significant time and money."
In detecting wireless worms, RFprotect uses a unique behavior approach, monitoring each wireless device's activity and matching patterns of behavior to those symptomatic of a worm attack. Behavior analysis is superior over signature analysis in its ability to detect unknown (zero-day) attacks.
Mobile 802.11 devices, used more and more frequently in organizations today, including healthcare, higher education, financial and governmental environments, are highly susceptible to malware infections. Before the capabilities introduced today by Network Chemistry, there has been no way to detect and mitigate mobile-to-mobile worm attacks.
"Wireless hacker threats are real, and enterprises of all types have to take them seriously, whether they've deployed sanctioned wireless LANs or not," said Esme Vos, wireless consultant and founder of MuniWireless.com. "The broad popularity of wi-fi means that the wireless hacking community is increasing and ever more sophisticated malware is on the horizon."
Security research from the International Computer Science Institute suggests that worm attacks cause up to $50 billion in direct damages annually. RFprotect's ability to notify network personnel of worm-like network behavior and pinpoint its source allows companies to accelerate corrective actions and limit a malware's devastation.
About RFprotect
Network Chemistry's RFprotect Wireless Intrusion Protection System detects all kinds of wireless-specific vulnerabilities, rogues, reconnaissance, and attacks. The system's intelligent sensors monitor all 802.11 bands, utilizing deep packet inspection and analysis. The information is culled and forwarded to a centralized server where it is correlated with information from other sensors and analyzed for vulnerability and intrusions.
Pricing and Availability
The wireless worm detection support is included in the latest RFprotect release. It is available at no additional cost to customers with maintenance subscriptions. RFprotect Sensor hardware starts at $599; RFprotect Client-Service software starts at $2,499.
