Dobson Communications Selects Alcatel's Mobile Next Generation Core Network Solution for Deployment
PARIS, April 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced it has signed a contract with Dobson Communications Corporation , the third largest GSM operator in the U.S. market, to deploy a mobile Next Generation Network (mobile NGN) core network solution. Alcatel's solution is designed to enable Dobson to evolve its current network to support advanced mobile services with one simplified, high-capacity, core network solution, as well as supporting the growth of its GSM subscriber base and helping Dobson reduce operating expenses.
Alcatel's solution should also help Dobson optimize its costs for future network expansion, thus ensuring long-term investment protection.
Building upon recently announced wins at Cingular and T-Mobile USA, this agreement strengthens Alcatel's position as the premier provider of GSM-based core network solutions for mobile operators in the US market. Mobile NGN represents a major break with the past, enabling operators to slash operating costs and capital expenditures, while optimizing and renovating their networks. The solution is currently deployed in-multi-vendor commercial networks and operates seamlessly in GSM/EDGE, 3G/UMTS, CDMA/MMD and WiFi/UMA networks supporting multiple transport technologies, including TDM, ATM and IP.
Alcatel's solution for Dobson is an innovative, standards-based mobile NGN core network solution. The cornerstone is the Alcatel 5020 Spatial Atrium Softswitch, a multi-standard and field-proven mobile call server controlling distributed media gateways and managing call/session control for voice and data services. It simultaneously supports multiple generations of mobile radio access and transport technologies.
"Dobson is focused on providing the most advanced wireless services as quickly as possible to our customers in rural markets," said Tim Duffy, senior vice president and chief technical officer for Dobson. "A critical aspect of this effort is capitalizing on new network technologies that improve network performance, reduce operating costs and enable us to evolve our network more efficiently to meet customer needs. Alcatel's mobile NGN distributed solution will help us optimize the cost of our continued network expansion and upgrades, while focusing on excellence in customer service."
"We are delighted to further expand our relationship with Dobson Communications by providing a reliable and cost-effective solution to support GSM, UMTS and advanced mobile services. This innovative mobile softswitch architecture should enable Dobson to realize significant savings in its mobile switching costs," said Hubert de Pesquidoux, in charge of Alcatel's North American activities. "As Dobson selected Alcatel last year for the provision and the deployment of a broadband software-defined base station solution in Michigan, we will continue to help the company provide an advanced solution for its customers in other rural and metropolitan areas in the United States."
In addition to its use of the Alcatel 5020 Spatial Atrium Softswitch, Dobson also relies on Alcatel for digital cross connects and microwave solutions.
