NEC Europe: Wireless Sensor Networks Toolbox with NEC security components boosts traffic forensic, agriculture and public security applications
LONDON, Dec 17, 2008 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) --
NEC's security and reliability components are a core part of the EU UbiSec&Sens* Wireless Sensor Networks*** Toolbox shown at the final European Commission audit on the 17th December in Heidelberg, Germany. The Toolbox enables secure sensor network solutions for a wide range of new application areas.
According to Heinrich Stuttgen, Vice President of NEC Laboratories Europe, a leading research institution located in Heidelberg and St. Augustin, Germany: 'WSNs are a key enabling technology for the future growth of the IT market'. NEC Laboratories Europe have been engaged in the development of secure wireless sensor technology since 2004.
Over the last three years, NEC Europe has developed the security and reliability components of the prototyped UbiSec&Sens toolbox for IEEE 802.15.4 enabled sensor platforms. The toolbox features energy efficient security and tailored networking solutions. It allows system integrators to choose and configure appropriate modules with the right balance between the level of security and energy efficiency to cater for specific application requirements. The software has been developed using the popular open source operating system TinyOS for sensor nodes.
The UbiSec&Sens toolbox for various standard hardware platforms (Mica Motes, TelosB Motes) has been proven and validated in three prototypical sensor network applications, each with distinct requirements on security, scalability and real-time responsiveness: -- Roadside WSN islands for traffic forensic and public safety -- Securing public places during high risk events -- Agricultural monitoring in a vineyard The toolbox was presented at the ZigBee Alliance member meeting in Vancouver, BC, Canada, October 6-9, 2008. Reaching beyond the security capabilities of the de-facto ZigBee standard, the composable lightweight protocol stack solution is able to support unattended sensor networks without any coordination or supervision while providing end-to-end system security.

*UbiSec&Sens is a Specific Target Research Project (STReP) in the thematic priority 'Towards a global dependability and security framework' of the EU Framework Programme 6 for Research and Development. 9 partners from industry and academia are involved in the project. The project started in January 2006 and has a duration of 3 years. For information on IST activities on Security and Dependability please visit the Information Society Technologies Webpage on ICT for Trust and Security.
** ZigBee is the name of a specification for a suite of high level communication protocols using small, low-power digital radios based on the IEEE 802.15.4-2006 standard for wireless personal area networks (WPANs), such as wireless headphones connecting with cell phones via short-range radio. The technology is intended to be simpler and less expensive than other WPANs, such as Bluetooth. ZigBee is targeted at radio-frequency (RF) applications that require a low data rate, long battery life, and secure networking.
*** A wireless sensor network (WSNs) is a wireless network consisting of spatially distributed autonomous devices using sensors to cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions, such as temperature, sound, vibration, pressure, motion or pollutants, at different locations. UbiSec&Sens is the project which intends to provide a comprehensive architecture for medium and large scale WSNs with an application specific level of security, as well as a toolbox of applications.
