'Medical academy criticises court decisions on mobile masts'

(DMeurope Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) France's National Academy of Medicine has criticised recent court decisions requiring mobile operators Bouygues Telecom and SFR to remove two base stations as a precaution against potential health hazards. The academy states that mobile phone antennas give off 100 to 100,000 lower exposure to electromagnetic waves than do handsets. The head's exposure to an antenna emitting 1 Volt per meter over 24 hours is the same as using a mobile phone for 30 seconds. The institution adds that science does not know of any mechanism by which electromagnetic emissions of these strengths and frequencies could have a negative effect on health.

The academy also criticised a scientific mistake by the Versailles appeals court when it stated that there was a "demonstrated risk" from extremely low frequency radiation from mobile base stations, when in fact the equipment emits at high frequencies. The academies of medicine, science and technology have set up a working group to study questions arising from the judicial decisions.
