Buzz's Bikes and Boats expands

Apr 10, 2009 (La Crosse Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Buzz's Bikes and Boats at 800 Rose St. has expanded to a second building at 732 Rose St. "We have over 90 canoes and kayaks in that building," store manager Dennis DeMaiffe said of the second location, which he refers to as the boat showroom. "And we now have more room for accessories." The building's grand opening is being celebrated this month.

"It was a chance to expand," said DeMaiffe, who has been involved in the business for almost all of its approximately 30 years. His son, Todd, and Todd's wife, Kymm, own the store.

Hours at both buildings are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday.

The Excaliber Laundromat at 211 Second Ave. S. in Onalaska reopened Thursday after being closed since a Feb. 13 fire in the mechanical room.

"The laundromat has been completely remodeled with all-new washers and dryers," said Jim Wilde, who has owned the business for seven years. The business is open 24 hours a day. It offers free wireless Internet, drop-off laundry service and laundry service to area businesses.

The Village Peddler antiques store at 124 E. Main St. in Hixton closed March 29, and its inventory will be auctioned at 9 a.m. Saturday, with a second inventory auction set for April 18. The building will be auctioned at noon April 17. Ron and Kristy Brown opened The Village Peddler in 2002. They decided to close it because of rising overhead costs, such as natural gas, electricity and employees, Ron said.

John Audetat opened Stonehouse Trading Co. last week at 712 Water St. in Genoa. It's in a stone building constructed in 1868.

Audetat said he and two partners own the business, which buys and sells guns, ammunition, antiques and collectibles. Audetat specializes in sporting collectibles, such as antique and collectible guns, as well as western and Indian artifacts. But he also buys and sells a variety of other antiques and collectibles.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and weekends by chance. Stonehouse's phone number is (608) 689-2700. Its grand opening probably will be this summer, Audetat said.

Audetat's landlords, Genoa native Anne Zabolio Muirhead and her husband, James Muirhead, are the new owners of the Genoa Motel & Loft, also at 712 Water St. in Genoa.

The Texas couple bought the two-unit motel and the stone building (which has the loft apartment) in October. Both buildings had been owned by Sharon Smith, who closed her Wickets and Blooms store in the stone building when she retired in 2006.

"We knew it was available," James Muirhead. "Anne played in that (stone) house as a girl.

We bought it mainly as an investment." The motel's phone number is (608) 689-2339, and its Web site is www.genoamotel.com.
