Depot employee dies of natural causes on job [The Anniston Star, Ala.]

(Anniston Star (AL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) May 29--Alana Grant's co-workers will no longer get the hot pot of coffee she often brewed for them as her night shift waned and their day shift began.

Grant, 27, of Anniston, was found dead Thursday morning at 6:48 as the day shift arrived at her office at the Anniston Army Depot, according to a depot spokeswoman. Officials said she died of natural causes, but could not specify further.

"She was just a wonderful person," said Jim Coger, a spokesman for Mutual TeleCom Services, the contractor Grant worked for.

Coger worked closely with Grant, and he remembered she was always concerned about the people around her. Over that considerate pot of coffee, she often chatted with her day-shift replacements before heading home, he said.

She worked as a night telephone operator for MTC at the operator offices on the Army installation's west side. That night, as on most nights, she was working alone, Coger said.

She connected calls within the complex, from overseas and from outside the facility.

Grant had underlying medical conditions that apparently contributed to her death, said Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown.

"It would have happened whether she was at the depot or at home," he said.

On Thursday, Grant's body was being taken to Huntsville for an autopsy, Brown said.
