BRIEF: Widen Enterprises confirms layoffs

Jul 02, 2009 (The Wisconsin State Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Widen Enterprises President Matthew Gonnering on Thursday confirmed the company laid off 15 percent of its work force this week in a market-driven reduction in one part of its business.

The Madison-based company specializes in software development, managed software services and color production services. While its software services business has seen a 20 percent increase, Gonnering said, its pre-press services -- involving color retouching and management of files primarily for printed catalogs -- has seen a reduction in demand.

"This was a very difficult decision for us," he said. "All well-run business have to make tough choices, and in this case we had to make a tough decision to align with our customer demand. It's definitely economics-related." Gonnering said he didn't know exactly how many employees were laid off, but a Capital Region Business Journal story in March listed 110 total employees at Widen Enterprises. The business also was listed as one of the top software companies in Dane County at that time.
