BRIEF: CHP's 'Zero Tolerance Day' targets drivers who text, talk on cell phones

Jul 20, 2009 (The Sacramento Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Wednesday is "Zero Tolerance Day." From speeding and tailgating to unsafe lane changes and seat-belt enforcement, California Highway Patrol on Interstate 80, and Highways 49 and 65 in the Auburn area will be paying closer attention to driving violations linked to a majority of collisions, a California Highway Patrol press release said.

In addition to road patrol and commercial officers, air operations units will assist from the sky, the release said. And drivers should be aware that talking on cell phones without a hands-free device and texting messages will be targeted.

Part of a monthly effort, Zero Tolerance Days are designed to bring awareness to unsafe driving habits, and while police officers enforce these Primary Collision Factors -- PCFs -- on a daily basis, they "will be much more stringent" on Wednesday, the release said.
