BRIEF: Snelling woman hurt in crash

Sep 11, 2009 (Merced Sun-Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A 63-year-old Snelling woman was hospitalized Thursday after her Hummer collided with a Merced Irrigation District dump truck, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The victim was taken with moderate injuries to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, according to Officer Luis Lara, CHP spokesman.

The driver of the truck wasn't hurt.

The crash was reported around 1:30 p.m. on Snelling Road, north of La Paloma Road.

Prior to the crash, the driver of the Hummer was traveling 55 mph southbound on Snelling Road. Meanwhile, the driver of the dump truck, a 39-year-old man from Delhi, was driving 40 to 45 mph northbound on the road, pulling a large bulldozer on top of a 20-foot trailer, Lara said.

Based on witness accounts, for unknown reasons the Hummer traveled partially into the northbound lane, side-swipping the left side of the trailer and the bulldozer.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, and DUI is not believed to be a factor in the crash, Lara said.
