Barnes steals another vehicle, still on loose

Oct 08, 2009 (American News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- An escaped burglar apparently stole a third vehicle on Wednesday morning and remained on the loose as of day's end, authorities said.

Todd "T.J." Barnes, 20, fled from the hospital in the early morning hours of Sept. 30. He was taken to the emergency room after feigning an illness, and his restraints were removed for a medical procedure. After the procedure, a fight ensued, and Barnes took off.

Capt. Dave McNeil of the Aberdeen Police Department said an officer attempted to make a traffic stop shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday. The driver didn't stop and pulled into a grass area near the intersection of Fourth Avenue Southwest and South Eighth Street before fleeing on foot.

The vehicle was reported stolen, and the driver was suspected of being Barnes, McNeil said.

Police set up a perimeter around the area for about an hour, but Barnes was not captured, McNeil said. He said reports that Barnes was armed with a knife were unfounded.

McNeil said there was minor damage to the stolen vehicle.

Barnes is suspected of stealing two other vehicles after escaping last week. Both of those vehicles were found in the Aberdeen area.

McNeil said Barnes is believed to still be in town.

After Barnes escaped last week, authorities spent much of the afternoon and evening searching for him in a cornfield and slough area between Bath and Stratford. His wife, also a suspect in the August burglaries, was arrested near the field and is in jail facing charges related to helping him escape. McNeil said people who harbor or help Barnes could face criminal charges.

Concealment of an escaped prisoner is a felony punishable by as much as five years in state prison and a $10,000 fine.
