Mobile Food Pantry filling the gaps
Oct 09, 2009 (The Bismarck Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Call it a Foodmobile.
The Great Plains Food Bank in Fargo is sending a Mobile Food Pantry to communities around the state, primarily those without a traditional food bank. The Mobile Food Pantry will supplement food that is already available at food pantries or, in communities without one, help find community partners to help.
The mobile pantry was introduced to the community Thursday at the state Capitol before its trip to three sites in central North Dakota -- Center, Garrison and McClusky -- later in the day.
Anyone in need can receive help from the mobile pantry. No proof of income or residency is asked for; each household is simply asked to register, giving a name and how many people are in the household.
Prepacked food baskets will be distributed; in many cases, additional food products will be available around the truck for clients to choose from. Baskets contain a variety of frozen meats, beans, dried milk, pasta, cereal, cookies, crackers, juice, baby food, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, and more.
According to numbers from the Creating a Hunger Free North Dakota Coalition, one in 12 North Dakotans seek emergency food assistance each year. The coalition has developed a long-range plan to fill gaps in service, meet increasing demand and connect hungry people to food sources.
From a 2008 study, the coalition decided to focus on four areas:
--Recover surplus food that might otherwise go to waste to help feed North Dakota's hungry.
--Distribute more food into unserved or underserved areas of the state.
--Build capacity of pantry, soup kitchen and shelter providers to accept and distribute more food.
--Ensure that those who don't have enough to eat can readily access the food.
The Mobile Food Pantry will be scheduled in communities on a quarterly basis.
