ONU student wins Showcase [The Lima News, Ohio]
(Lima News (OH) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Nov. 13--ADA -- While watching with her grandma, Cara Schroeder dreamed of one day being a contestant on "The Price Is Right".
She wasn't just a contestant on the show televised Thursday. She won the coveted "Showcase Showdown."
Schroeder listed her winnings as $500 cash for guessing the price of a digital camera correctly, plus the digital camera, luggage, a six-piece bedroom set and a trip to the French Riviera.
She lost out on a trip to Washington D.C., "but that's okay because I've been there twice before," she said. Schroeder, the daughter of Tony and Joan Schroeder, of Sidney, graduated from Sidney Lehman Catholic High School. She's a sophomore at Ohio Northern University in Ada, majoring in pre-medicine/biology.
Schroeder and her grandmother, Marilyn Siebeneck, of Glandorf, flew to Los Angeles specifically to watch the show with the ultimate hope of being chosen as a contestant.
They arrived at the Aug. 10 taping and waited in line from 4:30 until 6 a.m. They were given passes to reserve their spot in line. They then had to return to the studio at 8:30 a.m. for more than three hours of processing, which included filling out paperwork, getting name tags and doing interviews before finally getting to watch the filming live.
Schroeder and her grandmother did not make "contestants row" during their first trip to the studio. However, they learned what the studio executives were looking for in contestants.
"They want someone really enthusiastic. We told them our story of how we watched the show together in the summer when I was little, and Grandma promised me she would take me there someday," Schroeder said.
They returned two days later, and this time Schroeder heard her name announced to come on down to stand in front of host Drew Carey.
"It was unbelievable," Siebeneck said. "I can't remember what she said, but she had a spark during the interview. She has confidence in herself."
Once Schroeder won the showcase, "tears ran down my cheeks because I was so happy for her," Siebeneck said.
While the show Schroeder appeared on was taped Aug. 12, it was not aired until Thursday. She couldn't reveal if she won anything until the episode aired Thursday, except to tell her parents.
"It was such a long story," Schroeder said, she didn't have a problem not telling it.
She watched the show at school with 40 to 50 friends Thursday.
"We had pizza, pop, cookies and chips," Schroeder said.
By the end of the show, "people were cheering and saying, 'Oh my gosh; thanks for not telling us.' They enjoyed being surprised," she added.
She plans to take the sevenday, six-night trip to the French Riviera this summer.
Her father and brother are planning a cross-country bike trek, so she, her mom and little sister, Marla, will take the trip.
