BRIEF: Webb City to assume sewage plant operation

Nov 26, 2009 (The Joplin Globe - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- WEBB CITY, Mo. -- The City Council this week approved an agreement to operate the Center Creek wastewater treatment plant at 2100 N. Madison St.

The agreement already had been approved by the plant's board, which voted earlier this month to discontinue a contract with the current operator, CH2M Hill OMI Inc., a company based at Englewood, Colo. Webb City, Oronogo and Carterville are served by the plant.

The Colorado company had provided operator services for $219,000 annually, City Administrator Steve Garrett has said. Webb City paid about 85 percent -- or $186,000 -- of that cost.

Garrett said he estimates that the city can save several thousand dollars by operating the plant itself.

The council also approved the creation of two positions -- lead operator and plant superintendent -- that Garrett said are necessary for the city to run the plant. Salaries and benefits for the positions have been figured into $115,000 allotted for personnel, Garrett said.

The switch is not expected to affect sewer rates, though Garrett has said he hopes it will help the city control rate increases in the future.

The city is set to assume control of the plant on Feb. 1.
