Avaya keeps 230 Nortel workers

Dec 19, 2009 (The News and Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The anxiety is over for 230 Nortel Networks workers in Research Triangle Park who have a new boss and a steady job. As part of the $915 million acquisition finalized Friday, Avaya is absorbing 6,000 Nortel workers worldwide, including 25 top managers. One is Joel Hackney, the top executive for Nortel's RTP operations who oversaw the Enterprise Solutions unit that Avaya has acquired.

Enterprise Solutions employed about 280 people at RTP as of October, and 230 of those who remained made the cut at Avaya.

The unit provided data and network services to corporate and government customers, a good fit with the New Jersey-based designer of corporate data networks and phone systems.

It's not clear what will happen to Nortel's RTP facilities, or whether Avaya employees will keep working there. Avaya is evaluating real-estate options, spokeswoman Lynn Newman said.

Avaya's CEO, Kevin Kennedy, will address new employees in the Americas via a video broadcast, welcoming the new hires. Several executives from the Avaya's headquarters will visit RTP on Monday to answer questions about the integration of the two companies.

Nortel sought bankruptcy protection in January and is selling off business units to the highest bidders.
