Nov TD-SCDMA Mobile Phone Sales Volume Hit 525,800

BEIJING, Dec 25, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- The sales volume of TD-SCDMA mobile phones arrived at 525,800 units in November 2009, outpacing the sales volume of EVDO and WCDMA handsets for the first time and jumping 74.7% from 301,000 units in the previous month, according to the date by SINO Market Research Limited (Sino-MR), a leading market research and information agency in China.

TD-SCDMA mobile phones accounted for 44.7% of the 3G handsets sold in November in China. The top three manufacturers snatched a combined market share of over 73% in the TD-SCDMA mobile phone sector.

TD-SCDMA products took up more than 40% of the mobile phone sales volume of Yulong Computer Telecommunication Scientific (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., a smartphone maker in the country. The proportion now is also rising gradually.

The TD-SCDMA industry gained breakthroughs in November 2009 partly thanks to the TD-SCDMA policies launched by China Mobile, which greatly boosted the marketization of the TD-SCDMA industry, pointed out an executive for Yulong.

Domestic mobile phone manufactures will go on enhancing their input into research and development and pushing the continuous improvement of the TD-SCDMA technology.

Chinese mobile phone makers will launch a number of TD-SCDMA products next January. Moreover, the participation of OPhone mobile phones will be likely to drive the sales volume of TD-SCDMA handsets to a new high of over 800,000 units in January 2010.

In cooperation with manufacturers, China Mobile had launched 49 TD-SCDMA mobile phone models, 40 TD-SCDMA data card models, as well as 44 netbook models, according to the previous statistics.

The telecom carrier also launched home gateway products, family information machines and wireless fixed mobile phones compatible with the TD-SCDMA technology.

China Mobile is the only TD-SCDMA carrier in the nation's fledging 3G market and started a TD-SCDMA commercial tryout on April 1, 2008. Its 3G network will cover 238 cities across the country at the end of 2009.

The telecom operator earlier submitted its planning for next year to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), proposing a target of 30 million TD-SCDMA users.

The goal may be lifted up under the support of the telecommunications regulator. The leading mobile carrier is evaluating the requirements of the MIIT and will assign specific tasks to provincial branches by the end of 2009.

This year, China Mobile's target is a 3 million TD-SCDMA user base. Wang Jianzhou, board chairman of the company, said in early December that the number of TD-SCDMA subscribers had outpaced 4 million and was expected to reach 5 million at the year-end.
