Social Media Attacks
As we enter a new decade, technology has become more sophisticated than ever including hacker attacks and Internet viruses. Millions of companies worldwide using media platforms face risks every time they log onto popular sites, such as Facebook and Twitter.
McAfee (News - Alert) Labs' 2010 Threat Predictions report cites increasingly sophisticated threats to users on Facebook and other social networking sites for the upcoming year. Canadian Facebook (News - Alert) users were struck in early January with a phishing scam.
Social media sites are using Web 2.0 technologies that allow users to actively participate in content generation, content aggregation, media sharing, collaboration, etc. In order to provide unique experiences for users, personal information is typically collected and stored in the backend databases. The technical complexities of Web 2.0 give hackers opportunities to steal personal information, spread viruses, and damage servers.
Once a site has been compromised the reputation damage can cause an even larger financial impact to the business; users aware of the attack will avoid the site, the site may be black listed by search engines and security solutions will block traffic to the site.
The solution to increasingly sophisticated attacks is an increasingly sophisticated security appliance. Network security appliances transparently filter out injection attacks that are embedded in web traffic and effectively protects against social media sites tainted with viruses.
