ROCKEFELLER ANNOUNCES $2.9 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR IMPROVED BROADBAND INTERNET ACCESS FOR WEST VIRGINIA

Mar 05, 2010 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- Washington, D.C. - Senator Jay Rockefeller today announced nearly $2.9 million in funding for broadband Internet access for West Virginia. A West Virginia company, Gateway Telecom, LLC d/b/a StratusWave Communications, received a grant and a loan funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act). Senator Rockefeller wrote a letter in support of Gateway Telecom, LLC d/b/a StratusWave Communications' application for funding under the USDA's Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP).

"This is another piece of terrific economic development news for West Virginia," said Rockefeller. "This funding is really important because it will provide rural parts of our state with access to high speed Internet for the first time. This is about staying connected and being invested in the people, and the future, of our state. This is wonderful news." Background Congress provided USDA $2.5 billion in Recovery Act funding to assist applicants to bring broadband services to rural unserved and underserved communities. In all, today's announcement includes more than $254.6 million that will be invested in 22 projects nationwide. An additional $13.1 million in private investment will be provided in matching funds. To date, $895.6 million in BIP funding has been provided to support 55 broadband projects in 29 states or territories.

The broadband project funded today will provide a $1,475,459 loan and a $1,417,597 grant to Gateway Telecom, LLC d/b/a StratusWave Communications. The funding will provide a wireless last-mile broadband solution to serve residences and anchor institutions in parts of Ohio, Marshall and Harrison Counties. The purpose of the last-mile broadband project is to take broadband access directly to people's homes.
