Wine Time: Bad Boy Red 2007: Bad Boy Red 2007, Rocca Family Vineyards, California

May 12, 2010 (The Augusta Chronicle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- COST: $32-34 WHAT: This Bordeaux-style blend is a big, bold, food-friendly wine that has all kinds of complexity. It starts with dark berry aromas. The first sip continues with raspberry flavors, then deepens with touches of oak and vanilla. It finishes with a long, silky aftertaste.

The wine comes from two Rocca estate vineyards in Yountville and Coombsville in the Napa Valley. It's 40 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 33 percent Cabernet Franc, 17 percent Merlot and 10 percent Petit Verdot. The wines were harvested and fermented in oak barrels separately for eight months. They were then blended and spent another eight months in oak barrels. The wine spent two more years aging in the bottle before it was released.

WINERY: The Rocca Family Vineyard began when husband- and-wife team Eric Grigsby and Mary Fran Rocca bought their first vineyard in Yountville in 1999. The Grigsby Vineyard is a 21-acre parcel near the corner of Silverado Trail and Yountville Crossroad planted mostly with Syrah and Cabernet.

Purchased in 2000, the Canamagi Vineyard, is a 9-acre parcel in the Coombsville area of Napa. It is planted mostly with Cabernet Sauvignon, with an acre each of Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot.

Known primarily for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, the winery also makes Merlot and the Bad Boy blend. Their wines tend to be full-bodied, yet smooth and elegant. They farm organically and sustainably.

GOES WITH: I had this with grilled venison burgers, and it was a fantastic match. The oak and complex flavors held up nicely to the gamey taste and charcoal flavors. This is such a versatile wine, it would go well with other grilled meats, as well as an elegant dinner with beef tenderloin or lamb chops.
