OPINION: Good-bye, Duck, welcome back, Charles

Jul 27, 2010 (The Porterville Recorder - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- When we met with our Reader Advisory Board last week -- and in a column I wrote following that event -- we let you know that Managing Editor Brian Williams and I were giving some thought to how we manage the Opinion Page.

We said -- and we meant it -- that our purpose with this page is to allow viewpoints to be shared, not to advance a particular point of view.

To that end, we have decided to retire Mallard Fillmore and instead run a variety of political cartoons which will be selected to represent a range of viewpoints. We certainly can't promise that you will like every one of them. But we hope you'll like at least some of them.

New Sports Editor We also announced to the Reader Advisory Board that we would have a new Sports Editor joining us this week, but we couldn't release his name. Happily, we can do that now. And some of you will know that he is no stranger.

Charles Whisnand, a graduate of Strathmore High who went on to earn a degree in sports journalism from the University of Southern California before joining The Recorder staff in April 1989, has re-joined our staff.

Charles was Sports Editor for six years before leaving us in September 2000 to move to Carson City, Nev., where he continued his career. To say that we are happy to have him back is an understatement.

With football season and the start of school sports just around the corner, Charles will be very busy getting reacquainted with local coaches and helping us deliver the kind of local sports coverage you have told us you want.
