BRIEF: Android army: Dell begins selling touch-screen Aero smartphone

Aug 24, 2010 (San Jose Mercury News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Dell on Tuesday started online and phone sales of its Aero smartphone, which runs a version of Mountain View Internet giant Google's Android operating system.

The phone costs $99.99 for customers who agree to a new two-year contract with wireless carrier AT&T -- or $299.99 without a contract.

According to a news release, Dell executive Ron Garriques said the Aero is designed "to help people find new ways to connect with friends and express themselves socially" with features such as built-in Facebook, Twitter and YouTube apps. The phone also includes a 3.5-inch multi-touch display, 5-megapixel camera and Quick Office software.

Earlier this month, the Round Rock, Texas, computer maker introduced its Android-powered Streak tablet computer, which has a 5-inch multi-touch display and other features. The Streak costs $299.99 with an AT&T contract or $549.99 without such a commitment.

Dell stock closed Tuesday at $11.59, down 35 cents, or 3 percent.
