Outside interests: Works with Opportunity International, a nonprofit that fights poverty in Africa, Latin America and parts of Asia; main donor in drive to build new rink at Notre Dame, now named the Compton Family Ice Arena.

Hasso Plattner Age: 68 Occupation: German-born entrepreneur, founder of software giant SAP and currently chairman of its supervisory board.


Outside interests: Rival of Oracle founder Larry Ellison both in the business world and the high seas where they are yacht-racing competitors; has donated millions and helped raise even more to the effort to fight HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Listed at No. 127 on the 2012 Forbes billionaire list, with a net worth of $7.2 billion.

Stratton Sclavos Age: 50 Occupation: Former CEO and chairman of Internet security provider Verisign; now works with Compton at Radar Partners.

Outside interests: Formed the Sclavos Family Foundation with wife Jody to support charitable efforts in children's education and medical research; celebrated Greek heritage by financing Dio Deka restaurant in Los Gatos.

Gary Valenzuela Age: 55 Occupation: Former Yahoo financial chief.

Outside interests: With his wife, formed the Valenzuela Family Foundation, which supports San Jose area organizations such as Second Harvest, the local chapter of the American Red Cross, and Sacred Heart Nativity School.

Gordon Russell Age: 79 Occupation: Retired venture capitalist, Sequoia Capital, after earlier career in the biomedical and health care industries.

Outside interests: Philanthropic efforts range from health care in East Palo Alto to environmental work at Woods Hole Research Center in Massachusetts; Vancouver (British Columbia) Mayor Gregor Robertson is his stepson.

Rudy Staedler Age: 72 Occupation: Real-estate professional, partner with Brandenburg, Staedler & Moore, South Bay developer for gamut of projects from mobile home communities to golf courses such as Cinnabar Hills; partner in operation of Santa Teresa Golf Club.

Outside interests: Helped establish the Senior Cup Matches for the Northern California Golf Association, and is a former NCGA board member; officer and one of the developers of the Poppy Hills course in Pebble Beach.

E. Floyd Kvamme Age: 74 Occupation: Engineer who helped establish National Semiconductor, then moved to Apple in 1982 as executive vice-president for sales and marketing; later became partner at Kleiner Perkins.

Outside interests: Named co-chairman of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology by George W. Bush in 2001; active in Republican Party, backing Rudy Giuliani for president in 2008 and Rick Perry in 2012.

Greg Jamison Age: 62 Occupation: Former San Jose Sharks CEO; will give up share of Sharks if successful in current effort to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes and keep the team in Arizona.

Outside interests: On the board of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, which oversees the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Harvey Armstrong Age: 67 Occupation: Executive managing director of Harris myCFO, a personal wealth management firm; former tax partner with KPMG.

Outside interests: A graduate of San Jose State; served on the advisory board of SJSU's College of Business.

Tom McEnery Age: 66 Occupation: Mayor of San Jose from 1983 to 1991, before that ran family business, Farmers Union, including downtown real estate preservation and restoration projects around San Pedro Square and elsewhere.

Outside interests: Founding chairman of the Cinequest San Jose Film Festival, pioneered sister city relationship with Dublin, Ireland; co-founder of San Jose Inside, website covering city's politics and culture.

George Gund III Age: 75 Occupation: First owner of the NHL expansion franchise that became the Sharks after previous involvement with the California Golden Seals and Cleveland Barons; family wealth originated from Cleveland business and real estate holdings.

Outside interests: Philanthropic work includes areas of education, climate change, human rights and the Middle East as well as National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Nevada; has produced several films directed by his wife.
