Wi-SUN Alliance Completes Interoperability Testing Event And Member Meeting

MORGAN HILL, Calif., May 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Wi-SUN Alliance today announced that its latest interoperability event to test product and semiconductor implementations took place coincident with the Alliance's member meeting hosted by Cisco Systems. This event continues the rapid progress being made towards finalizing the Wi-SUN Field Area Network (FAN) technical profile specification and certification program, which will facilitate third-party testing of standards-based field area networks.

Leading equipment suppliers, semiconductor suppliers and software vendors supporting smart utility networks participated in the interoperability event.

"We are very pleased with the progress made by the members of the Wi-SUN Alliance to complete the technical specification and the successful outcomes for this interoperability event," said Phil Beecher, chairman, Wi-SUN Alliance.  "Interoperable solutions based on the IEEE 802.15.4g™ standard will allow utilities to purchase 'best of breed' products from multiple suppliers."

The adoption of Wi-SUN FAN enables wireless connectivity in advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), distribution automation (DA), and smart cities e.g., networked street lighting and other urban infrastructure) across all regions that are addressed by the IEEE 802.15.4g global standard.  The Wi-SUN specification brings Smart Utility Networks to enterprises, service providers and municipalities by enabling interoperable, multi-service and secure IPv6 communications over an IEEE 802.15.4g based wireless mesh network.  Mesh-enabled Field Area Networks (FAN) provide resilient, secure and cost effective connectivity with extremely good coverage in a range of topographical environments, from dense urban neighborhoods to rural areas, with minimal additional infrastructure.
