AC-DC Power Supplies: Worldwide Forecasts Trends, Developments and Competitive Environment - Twelfth Edition

NEW YORK, May 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The embedded ac-dc power supply market is projected to see considerable growth over the next five years, with the dollar market increasing from $22.9 billion in 2015 to $31.1 billion by 2020, a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.3%. Forecasts in this report include a number of developments occurring in new areas of opportunity such as the emerging smart grid, solid state lighting, developments in building automation and electric vehicle charging, as well as in traditional areas like communications, computers, industrial, etc.

Over 80 tables and graphs are presented in this report covering the embedded power supply market for 41 applications. The focus of this comprehensive analysis will be to provide decision makers with a detailed and insightful look at the current and future opportunities available in the embedded power supply market.

This report focuses on the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) market, and the figures presented in the following sections are based on the cost of embedded power supplies in large quantities to OEMs. All unit forecasts, tables and graphs include both merchant and captive production. All dollar sales forecasts generated and presented throughout this report focus exclusively on merchant power supply sales.

The embedded power supply forecasts presented in this report are based on a detailed analysis of 41 applications divided among eight distinct categories: Communications, Computers, Industrial, Solid State Lighting (SSL), Medical, Mil/Aero, Consumer and Smart Grid. In addition to the unit/dollar forecasts, forecasts were generated for merchant/captive production, wattage, package style, packaging by industry and design type. Forecasts and analysis presented in this report consider application drivers, technology trends, standards and regulatory considerations, market drivers and other factors specific to each segment.

One of the more interesting areas of analysis in this report are the dynamics involved is the projected growth in the lower wattage ranges; specifically the

<50W range. Power supplies in this range will not only maintain the largest unit market over the forecast period, they will grow 33.0% faster than the overall embedded power supply unit market. However, the opportunities for manufacturers here are projected to be considered as long-term opportunities as many of the faster-growing applications in this range are currently in the early stages of captive production. >In addition, embedded power supplies in the lower wattage ranges are projected to continue to make up a growing majority of the unit market over the entire forecast period. In fact, led by the computer, communications, consumer and emerging smart grids markets, the percentage of embedded poer supplies under 100W is anticipated to grow to make up over 77.0% of the overall embedded power supply unit market by 2020.

Over the first several years of the forecast period, the Communications and Computer segments will maintain the largest dollar markets. However, by the end of the forecast period, the Solid State Lighting segment will overtake both of them and account for over 33.0% of the total ac-dc embedded power supply dollar market. In doing so, the fast-growing SSL market is anticipated to present one of the stronger and more immediate areas of opportunity for embedded power supplies.

Embedded power supplies designed for smart grid applications which include smart meters, electric vehicle chargers and smart appliances are projected to continue to make up the fastest growing unit market. Smart meters discussed in this report utilize sophisticated communication capabilities to monitor energy usage and allow residential/business consumers to make informed choices about how much energy to use. They include electricity, gas and water, with smart meters measuring electricity making up over 98.0% of the total smart grid unit market over the forecast period.

Despite its large size, the consumer segment will continue to be one of the least attractive areas for power supply manufacturers as it consists largely of highly commoditized lower-wattage and inexpensive power supplies. In addition, a large part of this market is captive production and as a result, the power supply market for this segment will make up one of the larger unit markets, while maintaining one of the smaller dollar markets over the forecast period.

The Medical and Military/Aerospace segments are projected to remain small in comparison to the other applications covered in this report. Power supplies in both of these segments must meet and comply with a number of strict standards and regulations that do not typically apply in other applications and due to the rigorous design specifications and barriers to entry, the power supply market can be challenging. However, power supplies in each of these areas are more expensive than other areas, providing an opportunity for manufacturers who are able to accept the challenges offered by this market.

One of the more dynamic areas in embedded power supplies is the emergence of digital power management and control. The adoption of this technology is one of the most important factors in reducing power consumption and managing growing power complexity in modern electronic systems. This report identifies a number of market trends and technologies involved in driving digital power management and control in the ac-dc power supply market.

Another area covered in the ac-dc power supply market are advances in technology, components and materials, in particular advanced semiconductor materials such as Silicon Carbide (SiC), Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Gallium Arsenide (GaAs). Among the primary forces driving the further development of these next-generation power semiconductor technologies are regulatory rules, which call for higher efficiency in power conversion systems; demands for improved, lighter, smaller, and more cost-effective systems and emerging new applications such as electric vehicles and solid state transformers.

Although promising, in order to succeed these materials must be able to outpace silicon in both performance and cost. However, compound semiconductors are already widely used in various fields of industry, including electronic components such as materials for smartphones and optical components like LEDs. Next-generation power devices, for which compound semiconductors can be used, are capable of improving power efficiency and will contribute to realizing energy-saving society. As such, the demand for compound semiconductors for this use is expected to grow substantially in the future.
