American Municipal Power Selects Silver Spring Networks for Advanced Metering

Silver Spring Networks, Inc. (NYSE:SSNI) today announced that it has been selected by American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP) for an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) program. AMP is a non-profit wholesale power supplier and services provider for 133 municipal electric utilities in nine states. Collectively, AMP members serve more than 645,000 customers. For the initial phase, Silver Spring will deploy its standards-based IPv6 network platform and solutions to AMP to help its member municipalities provide better customer experience and service for 60,000 electric and 30,000 water customers. Additionally, Silver Spring will deliver SilverLink Control Platform and SilverLink Applications through Software-as-a-Service to help with rapid implementation, to minimize deployment risk, and to reduce the total cost of ownership.

"Customer service is one of the hallmarks of public power and is thus a priority for AMP's member communities," said Marc Gerken, AMP President/CEO. "AMP's AMI program is designed to be another tool to assist member communities in maintaining a high level of customer service. This partnership with Silver Spring Networks facilitates the two-way communications technology that can help with our near-term goals such as enabling grid reliability, outage management and remote connect/disconnect, while providing a foundation that can enable the deployment of future smart grid and smart city services at the pace that benefits our membership."

The AMP program will be under the oversight of Branndon Kelley, AMP's CIO. The team will include:

  • 57 years of experience delivering and managing IT solutions
  • 28 years of experience in IT in an electric utility
  • 14 years of experience managing AMI

The program will allow municipals both large and small to take advantage of this advanced technology without the burden and cost of staffing and expertise.

"Serving over 48 million people in the U.S., the public power sector has an opportunity to amplify its customer-centric vision through advanced smart grid technology," said Eric Dresselhuys, EVP of Global Development, Silver Spring Networks. "We are thrilled to be partnering with AMP, and look forward to closely working with them to provide a range of benefits for its member communities."

Silver Spring's IPv6 platform and solutions offer public power customers the network flexibility to add new participants, from commercial and industrial (C&I) customers to an entire residential block, regarless of the customer type or their location within a service territory. With over 23.6 million devices delivered, Silver Spring delivers advanced technology for smart grid and smart city programs for municipal and cooperative utilities such as Choptank Electric Cooperative, City Utilities of Springfield, CPS Energy, Modesto Irrigation District, Sacramento Municipal Utility District, and Snohomish County Public Utility District.
