LTE Is Past Its Prime - But Mobile Experts Predicts Transceiver Growth With M-MIMO

CAMPBELL, Calif., Feb. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Experts has released brand new analysis on Macro Base Station Transceivers. 50 pages of carefully aggregated wisdom provide timely guidance on the outlook for Massive MIMO, Active Antenna Steering, and the future of 5G- and explain where opportunities will arise as the Macro Base Station Market evolves into the next generation of wireless.

According to Mobile Experts, over the next two years, thousands of base stations will be upgraded with massive MIMO radios for China Mobile and Softbank. In addition, pre-5G deployment has begun, which drives large numbers of radios as various pre-5G systems use active antenna systems (AAS) for beamforming and for Massive MIMO.

"For radio hardware, the decline of LTE investment is here, and suppliers are facing a market slide for the next few years," remarked Principal Analyst Joe Madden. "Certain technical trends will offer relief, however, as new features drive additional content into the macro base station market."

Despite declining capital spending over the next few years, Mobile Experts predicts rising numbers of transceiver shipments, as Massive MIMO and TD-LTE systems continue to drive larger numbers of transceivers per base station. Thus, some vendors will find the shrinking market as a growth opportunity for new types of components used in the radio.

"As we took steps through 2G, 3G, and now 4G, mobile infrastructure investments grew exponentially. The public adopted phones, then smartphones, and a widespread replacement of wired communications. LTE enables our smartphones to become personal computers in our back pocket.   Every generation of technology has a surge of deployment, and now the 4G surge is over. The 5G wave of deployment is coming, and we see some basic architectural changes that will make the hardware quite different than other generations," commented Mobile Experts Founder, Joe Madden.

The new Mobile Experts report includes 41 charts and diagrams to illustrate how the macro base station market will change, includingmarket breakdowns by:

  • Air interface standard and generation
  • Power level
  • MIMO level (2x2 up to 16-stream MIMO)
  • Transceiver complexity (2T2R up to 128T128R)
  • Beamforming architecture
  • Transceivers by region
  • Local vs. CRAN vs Compact BTS shipments
  • Software upgrades vs. hardware upgrades of base station RRH units
  • Base Station deployment by network density level
  • Number of physical Remote Radio Heads
