Verizon Wireless Announces 4G Venture Forum for Connected Cars

Telematics, the integrated use of telecommunications and informatics, is not just a passing phenomenon. The fact that modern day technologies like GPS navigation, integrated hands-free cell phones and automatic driving assistance systems all come under this field only reiterates its significance.

Thus, it comes as no surprise that cell phone carriers like Verizon Wireless are making noteworthy advancements in the field, which may just shape the future of the somewhat nascent industry.

Verizon Wireless has announced the creation of the 4G Venture Forum for Connected Cars, an assemblage of prominent global automotive companies brought together by Verizon. The main purpose behind this venture is to accelerate the speed of invention across the automotive and telematics 4G LTE ecosystem.

Currently, automobile giants like BMW, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Motors and Toyota Motor Sales have joined the Verizon initiative, and more big names in the automotive field are expected to join later.

To add credibility to the 4G Venture Forum, Professor Sanjay Sarma of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has also been roped in to provide his academic expertise.

The 4G Venture Forum for Connected Cars looks to enhance the value of services, extending from embedded cloud-connected solutions to mobile applications; assist in outlining features and explore safety systems; and encourage third-party developers in this space.

In fact, Verizon’s latest imitative is in step with its past 4G Venture Forum, which dealt with all the advancements in 4G technology. The 4G Venture Forum for Connected Cars, however, will focus all its energies on automotive space and address the specific needs of this growing market.

"There are many challenges to designing next-generation telematics and infotainment solutions, including supporting safe and responsible driving, advancing vehicle-to-vehicle solutions and improving sustainability," said Tami Erwin, chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless.  "As an innovator in the technology industry, Verizon is a natural impetus for this collaboration, which we all expect will include other companies and spur results that will benefit not only the industry, but millions of consumers around the world."
