Meru Networks Deploys Identity Manager

Meru Networks has rolled out an enhanced bring-your-own-device (BYOD) groundwork complete with guest access management solutions and property management system capabilities.

Identity Manager is made to be platform and vendor-agnostic, meaning that it works across all major operating systems through both wired and wireless connections. The service breaks down into two basic modules; Smart Connect and Guest Connect. Smart Connect is what handles BYOD client provisioning, while Guest Connect takes care of permissions, billing and allows for guest users to connect to the Web.

"We have found the perfect solution for us in the form of Identity Manager. The previous and very serious problem we had of not being able to generate several accounts at once has now been solved. The reduction in additional workload for the computer center staff is clearly evident,” said director of IT and media center at the Technical University of Dortmund, Hans Bornemann.

“We will probably expand the solution in the future using Meru's Bring-Your-Own Device features, which will further simplify access to the University's network for our staff and lecturers,” he added.

Public businesses that provide public Wi-Fi services, such as hotels and various restaurants, can’t just go about deploying the services in the same manner as an average home wireless setup, considering the potential for a range of security issues. That said, such businesses need a secure and flexible means of allowing Wi-Fi connectivity to customers and employees that will remain protected without sacrificing its user-friendliness.

Identity Manager not only knocks out both of those requirements, but also reduces IT workload through device and on-boarding process automation. Meru hasn’t specified the type of encryption, but describes it as ‘enterprise-strength’ which, along with the company’s trends in security, suggests that it comes with a TLS-VPN encryption as opposed to a more basic SSL setup.
