Maxxor, a South African mobile application developer, has just announced a new HTML5-enabled version of its “Moonbase” game for iOS, Android and Facebook.
The game is billed as a strategic MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game) where players mine the moon for Helium-3.
“This game perfectly blends classic strategic gaming elements with social interaction and interactive play on a truly massive scale,” Maxxor said in a press release describing the game. “Gamers find themselves on the moon in the not-too-distant future, tasked to mine the precious element Helium-3 and send it to earth where it will be used as fuel for limitless fusion-based power. It's a simple premise, but succeeding in this game is anything but. Furthermore, the game has grown as a result of its most recent update too, now offering more to players than ever before.”
People might have laughed when Newt Gingrich suggested building a real moon base when he was still running for president earlier this year, but Maxxor claims thousands of players for their game already.
The game is currently available for free on Apple's App Store. It works on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. An Android version is available as well.
Another new feature is a new tutorial aimed at getting players new to the game up to speed as soon as possible. Maxxor has also integrated the game with Facebook, allowing players to brag about their exploits mining Helium-3 to their friends within the game.
“[The game is] still populated with thousands of other live Moonbase players vying for as much space loot as they can get their hands on. Players are free to interact with each other, in fact it's a must as without alliances players' moonbases are a target for anyone plotting a raid!” the release continues.
Maxxor claims that their game offers players a wide variety of strategies to collect treasure on the Moon. “Spend money reinforcing your base to keep it safe from unsavory players? Expand your mines and invest in better equipment to get rich quicker? In Moonbase the big decisions are always in the player's hands.”
