Marvell and Wilocity Team Up to WiGig Devices

Marvell and Wilocity have announced a new partnership to market new tri-band Wi-Fi products.

Wilocity specializes in the 60 GHz wireless range. The two companies will cooperate to bring WiGig wireless platforms to connect PCs, mobile devices, and network infrastructure together. WiGig is short the Wireless Gigabit Alliance, an organization of vendors working together to promote wireless networking using multi-gigabit speeds over the unlicensed 60 GHz frequency band.

“60 GHz wireless is an exciting in-room multi-gigabit Wi-Fi technology that enhances end users' wireless experience and has the potential to eliminate more wires from consumers' homes," Sameer Bidichandani, senior director of technology strategy at Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. said. "We look forward to collaborating with Wilocity to deliver cutting-edge WiGig products to the market that maintain compatibility with hundreds of millions of existing Wi-Fi devices."

“We are honored to be teaming with an industry leader like Marvell to accelerate the momentum of 60 GHz in the market," said Dror Meiri, vice president of business development for Wilocity. "Together we will continue to lead the way to set new standards in truly wireless and ultra high-speed wireless connectivity and display solutions.”

The two companies will work on developing light platforms over mobile, while still providing advanced performance. They aim to produce the first truly Wireless Bus Extension, or WBE. This will eliminate the need for cables and allow manufacturers to create even smaller devices with even small footprints. WiGig performance will also allow for fast syncing of devices, wireless docking, and very low latency. The technology will allow laptops, smartphones, tablets and other wireless gadgets to connect easily and transfer data at rates much faster than today's standard Wi-Fi networks, offering speeds of up to seven gigabits per second. At the same time, the technology will be backwards-compatible with standard Wi-Fi devices.
