Sprint Launching HD Voice at End of 2012

Despite being one of the top cellular providers in the United States, Sprint is still seen as the annoying little brother by some when comparing the company to AT&T and Verizon.

Sprint seems well aware of the fact that it is still not as well known or as powerful as some of its competitors and the company is taking quite a few steps in order to rise the ranks over the next few years. The latest step by Sprint appears to be the launch of its HD Voice service by the end of 2012.

Sprint has already taken steps to better compete with companies like AT&T by finally launching its 4G networks in several U.S. cities with more on the way. The HD Voice could be a significant step forward as well, even if the initial rollout will not be all that impressive or that wide in scope.

For starters, Sprint says that only the HTC Evo 4G LTE phones will support HD Voice. This HD Voice is supposed to be an even better voice call quality to go along with the higher speeds of Sprint wireless networks. When the new service is first rolled out, it will only work if the person enrolled has an HTC Evo 4G LTE phone and if the person they are calling also has the same kind of phone.

This means that while that specific group of handset owners can take advantage of the service by the end of this year, most Sprint customers won’t notice any change to their call quality.

Sprint has acknowledged that if this service is really going to catch on and net them more subscribers, it is going to need to widen the number of phones that support HD Voice. Sprint also says that part of the problem is that the support of HD Voice is not something that can be easily inserted after production. That means the company is going to have to release more phones in the future, rather than boost the current handsets. This also means that most Sprint customers will most likely not see the benefits of HD Voice until late 2013 and perhaps 2014.
